Stay Interviews: The Secret to Employee Retention

Have you ever wondered how your employees are feeling about their employment with you? The use of exit interviews with leavers is very well established within UK plc, but the use of stay interviews to find out why people stay with you is a more modern intervention.

Stay interviews are a powerful tool for organisations aiming to boost employee retention. These structured and confidential conversations provide valuable insights into employee satisfaction and areas for improvement. While there are no strict guidelines on the frequency of stay interviews, conducting them at least once a year is recommended. For even better retention rates, aim for 2-4 times a year.

Many organisations conduct stay interviews but falter at the final step. They gather extensive feedback from employees on how to improve the organisation but fail to implement any positive changes. This lack of action can lead to frustration and disengagement among employees. We say the same with employee engagement surveys, your right to ask is lost if you do not respond to the feedback you have been given!

Here’s some steps as to how to structure your Stay Interview:

  1. Introduction: Begin by explaining the purpose of the interview. Emphasize that it is not a performance review and that the discussion will remain confidential, constructive, and understanding.
  2. Initial Questions: Ease into the conversation with questions like, “How have you been feeling lately?” and “Are you enjoying your current role?”
  3. Role-Specific Questions: Ask about their role with questions such as, “How are you finding the tasks you are being given?” and “Do you feel comfortable with the workload you are provided with?”
  4. Work Culture: Understand their view of the work culture by asking, “Do you feel comfortable reaching out for help?” and “How would you best describe the work culture?”
  5. Career Aspirations: To retain employees, it’s crucial to understand their career aspirations. Questions like, “Do you feel like we are meeting your needs for career growth?” and “Can we offer you additional training to maximize career growth?” are essential.
  6. Company Views: Discuss whether their views of the company have changed since they started. This provides valuable information for making necessary adjustments.
  7. Closing the Interview: Express support and growth towards the employee. Let them know you appreciate their time and will reflect on their feedback to address any changes.

Here’s some top tips to make Stay Interviews effective:

  • Maintain a conversational tone.
  • Take notes to capture key points.
  • Actively listen and show genuine interest.
  • Avoid being defensive about critiques or challenges they raise.
  • Follow through on any commitments made during the discussion.
