How to Bring Your Team Together When Things Go Wrong - hr support services

Every nursery hits a bump in the road from time to time. Maybe you’ve had a disappointing Ofsted inspection. Perhaps a parent has made a serious complaint. It could be that a key team member has left suddenly, or there’s tension following a grievance that’s spilled into the open.

Whatever the challenge, one thing is certain: if it isn’t handled well, it can quickly spiral. Morale dips, gossip spreads, confidence wobbles – and before you know it, the stability of your nursery is at risk. That’s why, as a leader, your priority is to stop the rot and pull everyone back together. And one of the most effective ways to do that is by reconnecting your team with your shared values.

Set the tone from the top
Your team will be watching how you react. If you look panicked or avoid talking about the issue, they’ll assume the worst. If you stay calm, honest, and focused, they’ll follow your lead. Be upfront about what’s happened, explain what it means, and outline the next steps. People don’t expect you to have all the answers straight away – but they do need reassurance that someone is steering the ship.

Remind everyone why they’re here
In tough times, it’s easy for staff to lose sight of the bigger picture. Remind them of what matters most: giving children the best start, supporting families, working as one team. Shared values act like glue – they hold people together when everything else feels uncertain.

Make space for honest conversations
Sometimes, just letting people talk is half the battle. Bring the team together and create a safe space for them to share how they’re feeling. Listen, acknowledge their concerns, and focus on moving forward together.

Work on solutions as a team
People are far more committed to a plan they’ve helped shape. Involve the team in brainstorming solutions – whether it’s improving practice after Ofsted feedback or rebuilding trust with parents.

Celebrate progress – however small
Finally, notice and share the wins. Each step forward boosts morale and builds momentum.

Adversity doesn’t have to break your team. In fact, handled well, it can strengthen it. By leading with honesty, keeping values front and centre, and tackling challenges together, you’ll help your nursery bounce back stronger than ever.
