Unlocking Workplace Success: How Access to Work Can Benefit Your Business

March 26, 2025

Fostering an inclusive and supportive workplace is not only a legal obligation but also a key factor in creating a diverse and productive workforce. One valuable resource available to UK employers is the Access to Work scheme, a government initiative designed to provide practical and financial support to employees with disabilities, long-term health conditions, and neurodivergence, such as ADHD or autism.

It’s designed to help individuals overcome workplace barriers that might not be covered by an employer’s reasonable adjustments.

What is Access to Work?

Access to Work is a UK government grant designed to break down workplace barriers by funding adjustments beyond an employer’s legal obligations under the Equality Act 2010. The goal? To empower employees to perform their best without unnecessary challenges holding them back.

What Support Does Access to Work Provide?

The grant can fund a range of support measures, including:

  • Specialist Equipment & Software – such as ergonomic chairs, screen readers, or speech-to-text software.
  • Support Workers & Mentors – including job coaches, British Sign Language (BSL) interpreters, or mental health support workers.
  • Travel costs if public transport is not suitable due to a disability.
  • Mental Health Support – tailored plans to help employees manage stress, anxiety, or other challenges at work and could include counselling or a support plan.
  • Workplace Adjustments Beyond Reasonable Adjustments – such as additional training or support for neurodivergent employees.

Who is eligible:

  • Must be 16 or over.
  • Must have a physical or mental health condition, disability, or neurodivergence that affects work.
  • Must be employed, self-employed, or about to start a job or work trial.
  • Can also be used for apprenticeships, work placements, or internships.

How Can Employers Support the Process?

  • Encourage Employees to Apply: Direct eligible staff to the Access to Work application ongov.uk.
  • Be Open to Workplace Assessments: Assessors may reach out to discuss the best adjustments for your team.
  • Implement Recommended Adjustments: While most costs are covered, larger businesses (50+ employees) may need to contribute.
  • Promote an Inclusive Culture: Create a workplace where employees feel comfortable disclosing their needs without fear of stigma.

Access to Work is a game-changing tool that can transform your workplace into an inclusive, high-performing powerhouse. By embracing this scheme, businesses can unleash the full potential of their workforce while staying ahead in today’s competitive market.

Encourage your employees to apply today and invest in a workplace that truly works for everyone!
